Shared product data can support consistent identity while affected-lot analysis still needs event-level links among inputs, transformations, quantities, locations, and outputs.

Specifications describe the intended product; genealogy describes what happened

Foods Connected presents a broad food supply-chain platform with separate solution areas for specifications and new-product development, supplier compliance, procurement, traceability, quality, HACCP, meat processing, and analytics. A shared environment can help teams use consistent product, ingredient, supplier, facility, and requirement records across those activities instead of re-keying identities and attributes in each function.

The specification and the lot record still answer different questions. A specification describes the approved or intended composition, attributes, packaging, allergen information, supplier requirements, process expectations, or label facts for a version of a product. Lot genealogy describes the actual identities, quantities, events, locations, transformations, commingling, rework, and outputs associated with physical food. The current specification cannot be substituted for evidence of what entered a particular batch.

The link needs version, event, quantity, and location

A defensible record should connect item and ingredient identifiers, specification version and effective date, approved supplier and facility, purchase and receiving records, traceability lot codes, quantities and units, critical tracking events, locations, transformation inputs and outputs, rework, waste, shipment, recipients, corrections, and responsible users. When a supplier or specification changes, the system should identify the lots made under each state rather than applying today's data retrospectively.

Exceptions must remain explicit. Substitution, split receipts, partial consumption, repacking, relabeling, commingled input, rework, unit conversion, returned material, and corrected partner data can break a simple one-to-one link. A complete-looking product master may coexist with a missing event or unreconciled quantity. Teams should preserve the gap, the investigation, and the disposition instead of filling the genealogy with an assumed relationship.

Test a specification change against physical inventory

A representative evaluation should receive two supplier lots under different specification versions, consume them in separate and commingled production, create rework, split an output lot, ship partial quantities, and then revise an ingredient or allergen attribute. Reviewers should be able to identify every potentially affected lot, explain the version and event links, reconcile quantities, isolate uncertainty, and preserve the source records used for any hold, withdrawal, recall, or release decision.

Ask current or prospective providers to demonstrate the named workflow with representative data and an exception—not a polished feature tour. Record what official documentation establishes, what a provider states, what the team observes, and what remains unresolved.

A defensible review also identifies the dependency outside the product. Authority interpretation, policy configuration, data quality, integrations, human judgment, approval rights, release governance, training, and retained evidence may remain customer or service responsibilities. The evaluation should preserve those boundaries instead of treating a technology claim as the complete operating model.
